On March 31, 1960, he arrived in New York City and taught Judo at Judo Inc. in NYC from April 1960 to March 1962. He defeated U.S. National champion Jim Bregman (Bronze medallist 1964 Olympic) and Jack Lagland (French Judo ka) in Washington, DC. The AAU recognized Yonezuka as a professional.

In 1962 he taught Judo at West Point Military Acadamy and opened the Judo & Karate Center in New Jersey. Since he could no longer enter amateur Judo competitions, he fought for prize fights from 1962 - 1964. During that time he:

  • Defeated five black belts in succession while blindfolded in Manhattan center, New York.
  • Defeated light heavy weight boxer
  • Defeated 450 lb Jujitsu man
  • Defeated 3 times NJ light heavy weight wrestling champ
  • Defeated 2 national colleague wrestling champs
  • Defeated 15 black belts in succession in 3 minutes in Pittsburgh

In 1964 he coached the U.S. Air Force Judo team with Mr. Takahiko Ishikawa.

In 1970, the National Master's Championship began. Yonezuka was allowed to compete and won for seven consecutive years in the 209 lb and under division. In 1980, he began coaching the U.S. National team for various international tournaments. As head coach, the team participated in the following championships and games:

1982 - World Championship in Moscow
1985 - World Championship in Seoul
1987 - World Championship in Essen
1988 - Olympic Games in Seoul
1991 - Pan American Games in Cuba
1992 - Olympic Games in Barcelona
1993 - 1999 U.S. Sumo team to the World Sumo Championship.

Although his personal achievements are impressive, the walls at the Cranford Dojo have become a display case for the Club's students - photographs and newspaper articles abound with Olympic Champions and stellar athletes of all ages.
